The sprawling tube race course that Takeru and Taira speed through in the first episode of FREEDOM is lined with numerous sensors and cameras, allowing those viewing the monitors positioned in the spectator stands to keep a constant eye on the action. The giant circuit of tubes is a
remnant of the initial lunar surface colonization operation effort, and is rumored to have once been a waterway built to draw water from distant supply sources, or a superconductive accelerator tunnel for particle acceleration.
Together with the founding of the Lunar Republic (Eden), all technological research and development efforts were banned, and every laboratory and related facilities were shut down. The tube raceway is believed to be one of these abandoned
facilities that have been repaired for use. Similarly abandoned research facilities litter the lunar surface—their numbers too great, it’s said, for even the Citizens Administration Council to keep track of all of them.
